Raising Children and Making Every Day Count

"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom." (Psalm 90:12)

Life goes by so fast here! You get married, have kids and before you know it, they are grown with kids of their own. My time with my children is fleeting fast and I don't want to waste it. My boys are getting big, almost teenagers. What do I want them to be? What does God want them to be? What am I doing to make them into young men who love and want to serve the Lord? Who will one day leave the protective hand of their mother and go to work, marrying and supporting a family of their own, some day. I feel like I've wasted so much time these past two years. They seem to be a bit if a blur. Like a fast moving train on to it's next destination. Only I don't know what that destinations is. I had two little boys last year who are fast becoming little men. Even my three younger children aren't babies anymore.

To be quite honest I have just been trying to make it through each day without any goals, aspirations for them or even myself. Just doing the chores, my responsibilities, teaching and staying above the heap of laundry. Not really having any focus on the future of what's ahead or what's behind. I guess it's easy to just go on through the motions and lose sight of what the real goal is. Raising good, godly children who will carry on a goodly heritage in years to come. Teaching them the importance of being good to people, sharing their time and sacrificing it as well. Caring for the souls of others and being well rounded adults who are able to work hard and provide for their families. I am particularly speaking about my two eldest boys.

Time is not on our side! The Bible says "Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom" (Ps. 90:12) What wisdom is that? The wisdom to see the preciousness of time. How often do we put off teaching our children the things that we so want to instill in them, or telling that acquaintance about the Love of God and even show our family how much we love them by spending "time" with them? I always say..I'll do that later or some other time when it's convenient. The fact is that it's never going to be convenient. Every day counts! So make everyday count! Everyday you put something off is precious time lost.

A young man by the name of William Borden Once said.."Each day consists of 24 golden hours; each hour consists of sixty diamond-studded minutes." He realized at an early age that he should be about his father's business rather than wasting time with the pursuit of amusement. He was a wealthy young man who traveled the world after he graduated high school. While on his travels he saw the world and all it's hurting people. He expressed his desire to be a missionary and enrolled in Yale university in 1905. His classmates noticed something different about him. Not that he was rich but that he was far off spiritually than any of them. He once made an entry in his personal journal that read "Say 'no' to self and 'yes' to Jesus every time" and in his Bible these two words "no retreats" He started praying with a young man every day before breakfast and by the time he was a senior one thousand out of 1,300 students there were meeting in such groups. He lead many men to Christ and did many other notable good deeds. He went on to graduate from Princeton Seminary and sailed for China but stopped in Egypt to learn Arabic because he was hoping to work with the Muslims who resided in China. He then got sick with spinal meningitis and died at the age of 25. Prior to death he had written in his Bible two more words under "no retreats" he wrote "no regrets"

Wow! I want my children to be like that! I want to be like that! Life is short! Let's not waste it on pleasure and vanity, for none of these things last. We are here but for a moment, like a vapor rising off boiling water. Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a short time, and then vanisheth away. (James 4:14) What is it that you want to teach, instill and experience with your children? "Only one life,' twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last" Be careful not to forget these two things: the magnitude of eternity and the shortness of life. I want so much to be a better parent and I don't have the time to put it off.

such a great post! I found this from "a wise woman builds her home" blog. This post could almost be me speaking to myself (or should i say, my conscience talking :D)
Thank you for the reminder of not to put the important things off until it is too late. I too am guilty of this as i get caught up in the everyday tasks of running a home. Its also nice to know it isnt just me that suffers from this!

Blessings,
Julie
